Leading with Integrity: An Enneagram Type 1 Encouragement to Excellence (Not Perfection)

As a Type 1 leader, you're driven by a deep, unwavering desire to do what's right, and to do it exceptionally well. You're the one holding the torch for integrity, continuous improvement, and a commitment to high standards. These are incredible strengths that can inspire your team to reach for excellence.

But what if that drive is fueled by a loud inner critic?

For me, that voice sounds like this: “What if I don't know the right answer? What if I say the wrong thing and make someone mad? What if they judge me if I get something wrong? This isn't going to work. You're a fraud." This relentless pursuit of an often-unattainable ideal of perfection can be exhausting, leading to procrastination as you wait for the "perfect moment" to launch. It can also create a nagging feeling that you’re never quite measuring up, no matter how hard you work. You push yourself to be flawless, and sometimes, unintentionally, you might project that same pressure onto your team, making them fear failure and avoid risks.

The Shift: Excellence Over Perfection

Here’s the powerful truth that can transform your leadership: excellence—not perfection—is your superpower. When you truly embody this, you don't just achieve high standards; you model a compassionate approach to growth. You give your team permission to take pride in their work without the crushing weight of having to be flawless.

This isn't about lowering your standards; it's about shifting your focus from an impossible ideal to a sustainable, inspiring reality. This is a lesson I've had to learn myself, especially when creating something big. I've had to let go of my own perfectionist tendencies for the sake of getting things done.

I found this to be true as I was curating my TikTok channel. I worried about scripted and carefully filmed videos, but I quickly realized that some content lands and some doesn't. What performs best are the honest and raw stories. The moments I chose grace over perfection were the ones that made an impact. This shift allows you to build trust, foster creativity, and create a culture where everyone can thrive.
